Casual user
You may be on your phone a lot, but it’s not currently interfering with your life in a significant way.
To maintain a healthy balance… stay mindful of your phone use, curate your experience regularly and stay engaged in real-life activities.
The goal is to maximize the benefits of phone and social media while minimizing the risks involved.
At risk
Your phone use might be taking up a considerable part of your day (or life). Your habits may be putting you at risk for a behavioural addiction.
Consider evaluating
- How you’re using your phone: how much of it is truly adding to your life?
- How the phone is making you feel: do you feel anxious, happy or (un)satisfied when you close the app/turn off the phone?
- If your phone is getting in the way of your life (work, school assignments, etc.)
- If you’re using your phone as a way to escape/distract yourself from real life issues
Problematic use
Your phone or social media habits may be having a considerable negative effect on your life. The good news is… you’re not alone, and there’s a way to turn the situation around.
To start taking control back
- Check your screen time: identify which apps are consuming most of your day
- Do a 30-day detox: remove all non-essential apps* from your phone
- Remove all infinite feeds: this includes everything you could, in theory, scroll through forever, YouTube, TikTok, etc.
* Non-essential means you’re not going to get in trouble for not using them. For example, your family might become concerned if you don’t respond to their messages for a month. Same for work and school apps. Examples of non-essential apps include: mobile games, shopping apps, Instagram…
